About Hunch
Hunch is a free web app that predicts how much you will enjoy a book before you read it. It was made by one reader, independently, in Malaysia, and is in early-access alpha.
Why it exists
Star ratings say what the crowd thought, and crowds have mixed taste. A 4.3 average is no help when you're standing in a bookshop wondering whether this one is for you. Hunch answers that question for one reader at a time.
How it works
You describe your taste once. For any book — photographed or typed — Hunch identifies it, gathers its description, moods and content warnings, and scores it against your taste across eight weighted factors. Ratings you give finished books calibrate later predictions. The full method.
Facts
- Price: free during the alpha; no payment system exists yet.
- Platform: any modern browser, phone or desktop; installable to the home screen.
- Book data: Open Library and Hardcover.
- Predictions: written by OpenAI's API from the book and a summary of your taste.
- Privacy: no ads, no newsletter, no selling data. Privacy policy.
