How to get out of a reading slump
Read something short, fast and close to a book you've loved before; give yourself permission to abandon books that aren't working; and read in small, regular moments rather than waiting for long sessions. Slumps usually start with a book that was a poor fit, so choosing the next one carefully matters most.
Go short and familiar
A slump is not the time for the 900-page classic. Pick a novella, a favourite genre, a reread, or a new book by an author you already trust. The goal is the feeling of finishing.
Abandon without guilt
Pushing through a book you dislike is the most common way a slump drags on for months. If you are fifty pages in and dreading it, put it down. It might suit you another year.
Make reading small
Ten pages before bed counts. Keeping a book on your phone or in your bag for queues and commutes rebuilds the habit faster than waiting for a free afternoon.
Choose the next book on purpose
Slumps are usually caused by a mismatch, not by you. Before you start the next book, check it against what you know you like. Hunch can do that in seconds from a photo of the cover, and tells you which parts of the book match your taste and which don't.
